Increasingly popular, TPO roofing visually stands out because of its color, which is generally white. It has sparked a growing interest thanks to its advantageous features and, mostly, because it is very environmentally friendly.
TPO membrane is a thermoplastic polyolefin composition which is combined with materials like talc, carbon or fiberglass, making it even more resistant. TPO roofing is a single-ply system that is very resistant to weather conditions.
The reason we are seeing it more and more often, is because TPO roofing offers numerous advantages.
The characteristic that stands out above others, is that it is environmentally friendly, which is an increasingly important quality. In fact, it is the most eco-friendly alternative on the market, given that it is 100% recyclable. Moreover, installation requires less (or no) glue, which means that the entire process itself is less damaging to the environment.
Its color, white, has light-reflecting qualities, which means that it has the unique advantage of reducing urban heat islands. It also helps cool building interiors, making it more comfortable and reducing air-conditioning costs.
Here is another of its strengths: it is perfectly waterproof and does not lead to humidity accumulation. Because of this, it prevents water infiltration, which is very damaging to roofing. Furthermore, not only is it humidity resistant, it is also resistant to severe weather conditions, bacteria and insects.
On top of all of this, it will not suffer damage due to extreme temperatures. It protects roofing against UV rays without any degradation. Great resistance to cold also makes it a very good option for Quebec climates.
First and foremost, before proceeding to the installation of the single-ply membrane itself, support panels are installed on the surface, which serve to reduce friction and allow roofing to “breathe” (i.e. expand and contract).
While the membrane is being installed, joints are fixed by hot-air welding thanks to a robot. This means no torch is being used, which makes the whole process much safer, since there are no risks of fire.
There are 3 methods for TPO roofing installation:
The first one is with a mechanically fastened system: we will be using screws and large metal washers to fix membrane.
The second is with an adhesive. It can be water based or solvent based.
The third is called “RhinoBond”. The RhinoBond process utilizes a system that allows to fix the TPO membrane to an insulated support panel by induction welding technology, which creates a solid bond between the membrane and the fixing points.
These TPO membrane installation methods make it one of the most eco-friendly alternatives, since they require little to no glue.
Hot air welding is the ideal process to obtain exceptional waterproofing. It helps make the TPO roofing perfectly watertight, protecting the roof covering and the roof itself from deterioration.
Since TPO roofing membrane is still relatively new to the market, it is a little bit difficult to produce an average. However, current data shows that with adequate maintenance, it can last from 25 to 30 years or even more, depending on selected system.
If we include installation done by roofers and material prices, a TPO roofing system generally starts at 8$ per square foot. Prices will then vary depending on total surface, installation method, number of accessories on roof, etc.
This is a relatively low price, especially due to the fact that it is a durable material, offering the best guaranties in the industry. Another thing to take into consideration is low maintenance costs.
A TPO roofing system requires minimal maintenance. As is the case for all types of flat roofs, we recommend a visual inspection at least twice a year, before and after winter. It is also possible to clean the roofing with a product that has been preapproved by the manufacturer.
During visual inspection, look for cracks and tears. Although TPO membrane is very resistant to severe weather conditions, it can be physically damaged like, for example, by tears caused by fallen branches.
This type of damage only signifies minor repairs. All things considered, TPO roofing membrane maintenance costs are very low.
As previously mentioned, TPO roofing membrane is still relatively new to the market. It is possible that some contractors may not know how to properly install it.
